In a dramatic Oval Office meeting on May 21, 2025, President Donald Trump confronted South African President Cyril Ramaphosa with controversial allegations of targeted violence against white farmers in South Africa.

  The encounter, intended to discuss trade relations, escalated into a tense exchange over land reform policies and a recent luxury jet gift from Qatar.

Confrontation Over Land Reform and Alleged Violence

President Trump presented a four-minute video featuring inflammatory rhetoric from South African opposition figures and images purportedly depicting violence against white farmers. 

He also displayed printed articles, repeatedly emphasizing the word “death” as he flipped through them. 

Trump accused the South African government of enacting laws that allow land expropriation without compensation, claiming white farmers were being killed. 

President Ramaphosa refuted these claims, stating that violence affects all South Africans and that the government has not confiscated any land.

  He emphasized that the land reform efforts aim to address historical inequities and are conducted within constitutional frameworks. 

The meeting included South African delegates such as Agriculture Minister John Steenhuisen and businessman Johann Rupert,

who highlighted that crime in South Africa is widespread and not limited to white farmers. 

Rupert advocated for technological assistance, including satellite internet services, to aid in crime prevention. 

Qatar’s Jet Gift Sparks Ethical Debate

The meeting’s focus shifted when President Trump addressed the Pentagon’s acceptance of a luxury Boeing 747 jet from Qatar, intended for use as Air Force One. 

Trump defended the acceptance as a cost-saving measure, stating that the jet was given to the U.S. Air Force, not to him personally. 

However, critics argue that accepting such a gift from a foreign nation may violate the Constitution’s Foreign Emoluments Clause and raises concerns about potential expectations from Qatar. 

In a lighter moment, President Ramaphosa quipped, “I’m sorry I don’t have a plane to give you,” referencing the Qatar jet gift.  President Trump responded, “I wish you did. I’d take it,” eliciting laughter from those present.
