Champions Trophy campaign England’s out

England has suffered yet another heavy defeat in the 50-over format, concluding a dismal Champions Trophy campaign.
South Africa’s dominant seven-wicket victory secured their spot at the top of the group, alongside fellow semifinalists Australia.
What’s next?
New Zealand and India are set to face off on Sunday night to determine first and second place in their group, which will establish the semifinal matchups with Australia and South Africa.
England, meanwhile, faces the challenge of rebuilding their confidence and form in the 50-over format.
Outgoing captain Jos Buttler, reflecting on the team’s poor performance, expressed hope that England can turn their fortunes around, despite a disappointing end to his tenure.
England was already out of semifinal contention before their seven-wicket loss to South Africa in Karachi on Saturday.
Bowled out for just 179 after electing to bat, it was the lowest total of the tournament so far.
Buttler, who announced his resignation as captain on Friday, had hoped for a stronger send-off, but his team struggled with both bat and ball.
“That was a really disappointing performance.
We are so far short of the mark today. It’s really frustrating,” Buttler said.
“We just aren’t making those big, match-winning contributions with the bat, and that’s been an issue for some time now.”
The loss marked England’s seventh consecutive defeat in the 50-over format,
but Buttler remains optimistic about rebuilding the squad ahead of the 2027 Cricket World Cup, set to be hosted by South Africa, Namibia, and Zimbabwe.

“As a group, we aren’t getting the results, and that has an impact on confidence,” Buttler said.
“It’s time for everyone to take a break, regroup, and work hard for whatever comes next in cricket.”
“But from this point on, there’s a massive opportunity for players inside and outside the dressing room to step up and be part of the rebuild of England’s white-ball teams.
The talent is definitely there to build a strong side, and I’m confident that coach Brendan McCullum and the leadership team will develop a clear plan.”
“It’s now up to individuals to step forward and prove they want to be part of this team’s resurgence and help get England back to where we belong.”
With South Africa’s win securing them the top spot in the group, Australia finishes second.
New Zealand and India have already qualified for the semifinals from the other group,
but their final pool match tonight will determine who faces Australia and South Africa.
If the match ends in a tie or no result, New Zealand will advance as group leaders based on net run rate, setting up a semifinal clash with Australia.
