Big Concerns Addressed”: Shashi Tharoor On PM Modi-Donald Trump Meet In US

Congress MP Shashi Tharoor expressed satisfaction with the meeting between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and US President Donald Trump in the United States.
Bengaluru: Expressing satisfaction over Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s meeting with US President Donald Trump, Congress MP Shashi Tharoor stated on Friday that it appears significant concerns have been addressed.
He also described the US commitment to selling F-35 stealth aircraft to India as “highly valued.”
Speaking to reporters in Bengaluru during the Global Investors’ Meet (GIM), Mr. Shashi Tharoor said, “On the defence front, the commitment to sell us F-35 stealth aircraft is highly valued.
It’s a state-of-the-art aircraft, and with the addition of the F-35 to our fleet alongside the Rafale, the Indian Air Force would be in excellent shape.”
“If you consider the main issues we’ve heard about so far, I’m quite encouraged. I look forward to getting more details once the Prime Minister and his team return, and I expect a briefing from the MEA at the standing committee,” he said.
Mr. Tharoor also remarked, “The press statements made by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and US President Donald Trump are promising. It seems that some of the major concerns we’ve had have been addressed.”
“For instance, on the issue of trade and tariffs, they have agreed to engage in serious negotiations, set to conclude by the fall, around September or October this year.
I believe this is a very positive outcome, as there was concern that hasty decisions in Washington could have negatively impacted our exports.”
“This approach allows time for proper negotiations, which I welcome. Secondly, regarding the issue of illegal immigration, the only point missing from what Prime Minister Narendra Modi mentioned was how those individuals were treated and sent back.”
“Otherwise, his stance was absolutely correct. These are misguided youths who were encouraged or induced to migrate illegally, and they should be brought back. They are Indian citizens, and it is our responsibility to take them back,” he stated.
“However, I hope something was discussed privately behind closed doors, not necessarily in the press conference, regarding how this was handled—the use of handcuffs, mistreatment, insults, and military aircraft.”
“I hope that behind closed doors, something was mentioned, even if not in the press conference, about how this situation was handled—the use of handcuffs, mistreatment, insults, and military aircraft should be avoided in the future.

I’m confident that if the Prime Minister addressed these concerns, the Americans would be willing to listen,” he said.
Tharoor said, “I am looking forward to a very constructive discussion because it seems we’ve achieved nearly everything we could have hoped for this time, except for an assurance on how our migrants are being sent back.”
Donald Trump’s statement that Prime Minister Narendra Modi is a better negotiator than himself is quite remarkable.
Trump, who takes great pride in his negotiating skills and is known for his book “The Art of the Deal,” has often been praised by his supporters, including the U.S.
Defense Secretary, who recently called him the greatest negotiator in the world. For Trump to now acknowledge that Modi surpasses him in this area is significant praise,
especially coming from someone who doesn’t frequently offer compliments. This is certainly good news.
